Job Summary

The Genetic Counselor will apply their clinical expertise to variant interpretation, reporting and other lab processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of genetics and genomics, as well as excellent communication skills, comfort with technical platforms, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Health Professionals (AHP) to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric AHPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 30-60 days and must be completed within first 90 days of employment.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $52.20 - $81.70 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

UCSF Health's Genetics and Genomics Services, Clinical Cancer Genomics Lab (CCGL) and Genomics Medicine Lab (GML) aim to achieve the highest standards in patient care. The labs provide clinical genomic testing services in a wide variety of clinical areas with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum of 1-3-years of relevant experience, preferably in a laboratory setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a quick-paced environment
  • Interest and comfort in supporting germline and somatic testing
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, database software, and laboratory information management systems and deep familiarity with commonly used tertiary analysis platforms

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of current literature and annotation resources in genetics and genomics
  • Familiarity with CLIA, CAP and other accreditation standards

License/Certification


  • Board certification-eligible from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
