Job Summary

Anesthesia Technicians are responsible for maintaining all anesthesia service areas in readiness for use by Anesthesiologist and Anesthetists. Responsible for anesthesia equipment and supplies; work independently and be able to make decisions and set priorities with some guidance; responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the institution; may assist Anesthesiologists with patient positioning, preparation of sterile fields, placement of invasive monitoring lines, application of regional, epidural and spinal anesthesia techniques, and invasive and noninvasive procedure setups.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined above in addition to more complex and specialty cases. In addition, but not limited to, the incumbents may be responsible for training other technicians; assembling sterile components necessary for procedures; performing quality control on specific equipment; performing laboratory tests such as blood gases (ABG), hematocrit (HCT), activated coagulation times (ACT), etc.; setting up calibrating equipment; as well as performing preventative maintenance and simple mechanical repairs.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $39.40 - $49.07 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Bayfront Operating Room (OR) consists of 14 surgical suites and 2 procedural rooms with 23 hours surgical stay facility. Our primary focus is multidisciplinary team-based approach and staffing, advanced technology, including integrated suites and robotic surgery.

The service areas include all operating room areas. Additional non-operating rooms areas may include but are not limited to labor and delivery, interventional radiology, EP lab, cardiac Cath lab, MRI, endoscopy, radiology, and Pre-op and PACU areas.

Required Qualifications


  • One year experience as an anesthesia technician
  • Recent experience (within the last two years) working with the following service lines: Pain/Spine, Ophthalmology, GYN, GU, General Surgery, OHNS, Robotics and Plastics
  • High school graduate; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • The ability to see well and read in dim light; able to distinguish colors on the anesthesia monitors; manual dexterity to manipulate small equipment including, but not limited to, twisting bulbs, turning dials, changing batteries, and pushing buttons; able to move in confined spaces; ability to repetitively lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure
  • Ability to work independently with good organizational skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • The flexibility to work and orient at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications


  • Current ASATT certification.
  • Associate degree or higher with a background in life science, allied health, or related field.
  • Previous training in related medical field (e.g., EMT/Paramedic training)
