GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2025! Deadline to Apply is Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 11:59 pm EST The Massachusetts General Hospital provides an excellent learning environment for healthcare management students interested in careers in hospital leadership. Each summer, Mass General accepts a limited number of master's degree students for administrative internship opportunities. Selected students gain exposure to the complex operations of a major academic medical center, become engaged in a mix of observational experiences and project-based work, and receive guidance and mentorship from experienced healthcare executives. Administrative Interns join a specific MGH department for the summer and are precepted by a senior administrative leader. Preceptors provide students with a broad range of learning opportunities depending on the priorities of the department, as well as the student's professional and academic interests. In addition, MGH interns gain exposure to the broader strategic and operational goals of a large and complex health system and academic medical center by attending tours, clinical shadowing, and meetings with senior executives. Please note that students that apply for and/or complete an administrative internship at MGH are at neither at an advantage or disadvantage if they later choose to apply to the post-graduate MGH Administrative Fellowship Program.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Typical activities have included, but are not limited to: - Attending high-level management meetings - Observing clinical care and speaking with caregivers or patients - Developing process flow maps of current processes and making recommendations around improving processes - Managing and analyzing data to inform department strategy - Supporting the capital budget process and/or evaluating prospective products or vendors - Attending grand rounds or other medical education lectures - Reviewing and completing financial analyses and statements - Assessing and summarizing new business opportunities - Supporting accreditation applications and site visits - Participating in clinical simulations and facility tours - Meeting with senior leadership Interns meet regularly with their preceptor(s) to discuss their progress. In addition, interns meet with each other and other preceptors to share information about their projects and to discuss current trends, issues, and opportunities in healthcare. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: The MGH Administrative Internship is a competitive position designed for exceptional students demonstrating high potential. MGH is a busy and complicated healthcare environment. Successful students demonstrate the ability to juggle their workload and to absorb and assimilate an extraordinary amount of new knowledge in a very short amount of time. Successful candidates will demonstrate: - Strong analytical and quantitative skills - Strong ability to relate to colleagues and work as part of team - Exceptional writing skills - Meticulous organization and attention to detail - Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change, uncertainty and feedback - Competent in use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) EDUCATION: * Bachelor's degree required * Currently enrolled in Master's degree program with an interest or focus in healthcare management (MHA, MHSA, MPH, MBA, etc.) EXPERIENCE: * No Experience necessary but student must demonstrate clear interest in healthcare management WORKING CONDITIONS: Administrative office and clinical environment on MGH campus. Intern should be prepared to spend time in patient care and/or research environments, including inpatient, ICU, outpatient, operating room and research lab settings. SELECTION PROCESS: Students interested in a summer internship must apply electronically no later than Sunday, November 10th at 11:59pm EST. A limited number of interested students will participate in two rounds of virtual interviews. Students will be notified before the end of 2024 if they have been selected for a summer internship. Each student's start date will be the day immediately following Memorial Day (Tuesday). The internship length, at minimum, is 10 weeks (individual end dates will be identified between the intern and their preceptor. Prior to starting the internship, students are expected to provide their preceptor with any specific requirements their graduate program may require. Applicants must submit a cover letter and resume. Other application materials will not be considered. If either one of the two documents is not received, the candidate will not be considered for a position. Students on an F-1 student visa must present their Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and visa documents to complete the hiring process.
