JOB TITLE:

Post Doctoral Research Associate - Agricultural & Applied Economics

JOB PURPOSE:

The Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics at the University of Wyoming has a fully funded opening for a self-motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate. This post-doc will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers examining how the consolidation of the healthcare industry influences health outcomes in the rural United States. The successful candidate will analyze restricted-access microdata within a Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) using econometric models. The econometric models developed in the FSRDC will be used to identify 1) the human and economic cost of healthcare consolidation, 2) which counties have been most affected by healthcare consolidation, and 3) whether there are imperfect substitutes to traditional healthcare establishments (e.g., hospitals) that may support rural health outcomes. The ideal candidate should have an interest in Extension programming and is expected to contribute to academic and Extension outputs.

Specifically, the successful candidate will use the Longitudinal Business Database (all employer establishments), the Integrated Longitudinal Business Database (all non-employer establishments), and the National Center or Health Statistics' Vital Statistics data. The successful candidate will work independently and with other team members to develop causal econometric models that reflect current trends in U.S. healthcare access and disparities in resident health outcomes. Results from the econometric models will inform local and state policymakers and industry leaders to improve rural healthcare access and rural health outcomes. Research findings will then be translated into meaningful and actionable information for stakeholders through an online mapping tool, policy briefs for state legislatures, and other outreach materials. There will also be opportunities for the successful candidate to lead virtual focus groups with rural healthcare stakeholders across the country that will inform both the team's research and Extension approaches.

"There are multiple potential locations for the successful candidate to either relocate to or commute daily to, including Laramie, WY, Ann Arbor, MI, Fort Collins, CO, and East Lansing, MI. These locations were selected based on project team or FSRDC proximity."

Position funding is for two years pending satisfactory annual performance checks. There is currently significant energy and activity around collaborative, interdisciplinary, and stakeholder-informed research related to healthcare across states and their institutions. Potential thus exists for the successful candidate to extend their FSRDC work on the project beyond the two-year contract if they independently secure additional funding, setting up the potential for a valuable research program that carries over in their next position.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Anders Van Sandt and other faculty collaborators at Michigan State and Utah State Universities. The salary is competitive ($60,000-$70,000) and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date is August 1st, 2025, but is negotiable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Construction of econometric models that relate healthcare industry consolidation to rural health outcomes

- Development of academic articles, outreach materials, and grant proposals

- Presentation of results and discussion of progress in group meetings

- Dissemination of project outcomes via publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at professional conferences

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

- Participation in meetings and/or focus groups with rural healthcare stakeholders

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule, but candidate is required to live in Ann Arbor (MI), East Lansing (MI), Fort Collins (CO), or Laramie (WY), or be able to commute regularly to one of these locations, unless they have experience working in an FSRDC.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- A doctoral degree in Agricultural Economics or a related field is required for this position; however, consideration will be given to applicants that are currently pursuing their Doctoral degree and will complete the degree prior to starting work. Candidates must complete all of their PhD degree requirements prior to their first day on the job.

- Ability to qualify for Special Sworn Status (needed for restricted-data access)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Record of publishing in peer-reviewed literature

- Experience interacting with stakeholders and/or incorporating stakeholder input into model development

- Familiarity and/or previous experience with health economics, regional economics, and/or industrial organization

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Previous interdisciplinary and/or collaborative work

- A dedication to outreach and engagement

- Ability to work independently

- A dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
