Tree Warden/Urban Forestry Manager

Brookline seeks a Tree Warden/Urban Forestry Manager to perform complex administrative, supervisory, regulatory, financial, budgetary, and professional work related to the development and administration of forestry operations, management of all public trees on or impacting Town-owned or managed land, including the public right-of-way, and enforcement of the Town's Tree Protection and Sidewalk Obstruction bylaws and all other pertinent bylaws. Performs the duties and responsibilities of Tree Warden. All other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Arboriculture/Urban Forestry or a related degree required; five to seven years' experience in commercial or municipal tree care and personnel management; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Massachusetts Arborist Certification required.

Special Requirements:

Class B Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License

MA Hoisting Engineer's License

Pesticide License

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge. Extensive knowledge of tree care and their diseases. Thorough knowledge of the techniques, materials, and practices of tree maintenance. Proficiency in the use of both Geographic Information System and Geographic Positioning System. Working knowledge of drainage systems, excavation, surface grading, soil compositions, landscape construction, surveying and laying out of street tree specifications. Working knowledge of tree and shrub pruning techniques and practices.

Ability. Ability to operate hydraulic and chain saws safely. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and interpret operating manuals, soil tests and engineering plans, documents, diagrams, schematic drawings. Ability to perform budget analysis, write and manage contracts.. Ability to write and administer grants. Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

Skill. Strong organizational, supervisory, leadership, communication, and public outreach skills are essential. Skill in operating all of the small and large engine equipment required to carry out the functions of this position. Strong technical and computer skills required.
