Job Summary

Responsible for managing the drug distribution system and providing technical support in all aspects of the delivery of safe, effective, patient focused and cost efficient drug therapy. Prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist.

Safety/Quality Improvement Responsibilities:

Identifies and reports potential or adverse drug events to the pharmacist and works proactively to prevent medication errors.

Improves the safety of high-alert medications by ensuring that appropriate storage and application of proper warning labels are placed on high-risk medications.

Identifies and seeks appropriate drug savings when possible.

Follows safety policies and procedures in the preparation of all medications and in the disposal of all hazardous and non- hazardous wastes generated during medication preparation.

Ensures departmental compliance with accreditation, legal, regulatory and safety requirements.

Assists with training new staff and verifies when department checklist is completed.

Completes assigned peer evaluations.

Medication distribution responsibilities:

Manages all aspects of the medication distribution system.

Follows established procedures to deter theft and or drug diversion.

Follows established procedures for maintaining record of controlled substances received, stored, dispensed or removed from inventory.

Follows established procedures for removing from inventory expired, recalled, or discontinued pharmaceuticals.

Troubleshoots ADC issues.

Prepares medication for distribution including patient specific medications and ADC restock for delivery under pharmacist supervision following appropriate age specific guidelines and procedures for packaging, labeling and storage.

Technical responsibilities:

Receives and screens medication requests for completeness including assessment for turn-around time requirements.

Understands the formulary and non-formulary medication process.

Assists the pharmacist in collecting, organizing and evaluating information for patient care, drug utilization evaluation and departmental management.

Prepacks medications.

Compounds non-sterile products under pharmacist supervision following appropriate age specific guidelines using proper techniques, equipment and/or devices. Legibly documents required information when compounding sterile/non-sterile products.

Completes ADD audits.

Inventory control responsibilities:

Purchases pharmaceuticals, devices and supplies. Correctly stores and labels all pharmaceuticals.

Maintains inventory of drug stocks and supplies.

Manages inventory to maintain dynamic working inventory.

Manages recalls and pharmaceutical returns and maintains appropriate records.

Maintains STAT and Emergency boxes. Receives and puts away daily order.

Enrollment in an approved pharmacy technician training program or Guild Technician program and certification as a technician in training within 30 days of hire is required.

Registered as a Pharmacy Technician in Training with the State of Virginia is required.

Registered with the State Board of Pharmacy as a technician in training. NC interns do not require state registration.

Employee is required to pass a national certification examination and register as a pharmacy technician with the State Board of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician Trainee - State License - Virginia Department of Health Professionals (VADHP)
