Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The primary mission of the Department of Statistics & Operations Research (
STOR) in the College of Arts & Sciences is teaching, research, and service. The department has 23 tenure track professors, five teaching professors and several jointly appointed faculty members. This department administers 6 academic programs including minors, a B.S., masters programs and a Ph.D. degree in areas of Statistics, Operations Research, Interdisciplinary Statistics & Operations Research (
INSTORE), and Mathematical Decision Sciences. The department also offers a variety of courses important to students majoring in other undergraduate and graduate disciplines. This department annually serves approximately 80 graduate students and 1,800 undergraduate majors and minors. We also serve over 2500 undergraduate and graduate students in other fields. This department has been the major supporter of the Center for Stochastic Processes and was a leader in attracting the National Institute for Statistical Sciences (
NISS) to the Research Triangle. The department also operates the Quantitative Consulting Center (
QCC), which serves clients from both within the University and off-campus. |
Position Summary |
This is a fast-paced, multifaceted position that performs a variety of fiscal and administrative functions to address business needs of the department of Statistics and Operations Research in the College of Arts and Sciences, including but not limited to, student services, facilities services, communications, purchasing, and inventory.
This position provides a first contact for the department and is responsible for communications in multiple platforms serving a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty within the department, across campus, and in the local, national and global community. The Admin Support Specialist is responsible for providing support in purchasing, budget management of purchasing funds, and budget forecasting to both the Department Chair and the Department Manager.
This position provides administrative support to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Analytics, and the Minor in Data Science, and is responsible for all business and records administration for both undergraduate programs, from admission to graduation. The Support Specialist also assists the Student Services Manager with payroll actions as needed.
Additionally, this position plans and supervises all departmental events including graduation, colloquiums, career fairs, room reservations, and other facilities-related requests. This position is responsible for co-managing the departmental work-study students and
SHRA temp employees, with oversight of hiring, work plan development, supervision, and termination. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Strong attention to detail and well organized
- Ability to multi-task and to identify priorities in order to meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work effectively with a diverse population of internal and external individuals
- Experience handling confidential and sensitive information |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience in a variety of university software programs such as ConnectCarolina, PeopleSoft, Infoporte, 25Live, Qualtrics, Wordpress, and Tar Heel Tracker. |
