Job Description

Currently, the Division of Cancer Biology comprises 13 laboratory-based tenure-track faculty with expertise across disease sites, including breast, prostate, colorectum, melanoma, and hematological malignancies, and molecular mechanisms including cell signaling, epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, mechanisms underlying metastases, extracellular vesicles, and genomic and epigenomic re-programming. There are close and productive interactions with clinical and translational investigators in the Departments of Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Surgery. The division is supported by $7M total annual grant funding, $5M of which is NIH funding. The division is home to two Centers of Excellence in Blood Cancer and Melanoma, two NIH-funded training grants, and the Doctoral Program in Genetics, Genomics, and Cancer Biology, one of six doctoral programs in the Jefferson College of Life Sciences.

The new Division Director will assume a leadership position within the department, joining the Executive Committee which includes the Chair, Vice-Chair, Directors of the Divisions of Pharmacology and Physiology and Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, the Deputy Director of the Cancer Center (ex officio) and departmental administrative leadership (ex officio). The Director will collaborate with the other members of the leadership team to establish strategy and tactics, and policies and procedures, which continue the development of the department on its upward trajectory. In that capacity, they will provide status reports on activities within the division to the Chair and Executive Committee; establish division goals and objectives and report to the appropriate committees the division accomplishments during the year; recommend plans and activities for the division for future growth and development; and help plan and participate in departmental retreats and strategic planning activities. They will represent the divisional faculty, and their interest, to leadership in strategic decision-making. The Director will drive the identification and attraction of new faculty to the division. They will mentor junior and mid-level faculty to support success in professional development and research productivity, and help identify appropriate mentors for them within, and outside, the division that are important to the division and department. The Director will identify opportunities for the division to grow its educational portfolio for clinical, doctoral, and post-doctoral trainees, and undergraduates within Jefferson University's ten colleges and four schools. They will provide leadership for, and engage faculty and staff participation in, educational strategies and tactics that bolster departmental research priorities, including, but not limited to, program development, review and evaluation; curriculum initiatives; assessments of educational outcomes. The Director will be a key stakeholder in establishing strategy and tactics to grow the division, including major space expansion and faculty recruitment.

The successful candidate will maintain a robust, high quality extramurally-funded research program that complements, or brings new dimensions to, existing programs in the division. They will be named as the Hilary Koprowski Professor in Cancer Biology, which is an endowed professorship.
