Job Summary

The Breast Health Navigator (BHN) provides clinical care coordination for patients undergoing Mammography procedures/examinations. The BHN is an RN with advanced skills who is an expert in Radiology nursing utilizing their extensive knowledge of breast diseases to serve as a consistent care coordinator throughout the continuum of care. They are responsible for assessing the healthcare barriers and the physical, psychological, and social needs of the patient, providing them with educational, emotional, and social support. This role requires a dedicated person knowledgeable in the flow of events in the screening, diagnostic breast care, treatment, and survivorship setting of breast cancer.

The BHN is an individual who is trained to navigate a patient through the processes of care, diagnosis and treatment process.

The BHN reports to the Unit Director Nurse Manager and works closely with the Radiology leadership team to ensure delivery of appropriate and timely services to patients and other key stakeholders. The BHN has primary responsibility for day-to-day care coordination of care throughout the entire pre-, intra- and post-procedure interventions in order to assist with the fluid operations of the Mammography services. The BHN acts as a mentor, preceptor, and resource for other Clinical Nurses (CN 1, 2 & 3) as well as other staff members.

The BHN, in conjunction with the radiology nursing leadership team, assists in procedure policy and procedure development and ongoing updates. This position also provides input to department leaders regarding workflows to enhance efficiency and patient care. Escalates clinical or personnel issues to AN 2 or Nurse Manager as appropriate.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California Registered License without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Breast Health Clinical Navigator (BHCN) Certification within 24 months of hire
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • 3-5 years of recent RN Radiology experience
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated accountability and professionalism.
  • Ability to adapt to change in a positive, professional and productive manner.
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.
  • Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • At least 2 years of clinical care coordination and/or navigation in breast health and/or radiology

Department Overview

The UC Davis Medical Center Radiology Department, Ambulatory Care Center and 48X consists of Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, Ultrasound, Computerized Tomography (CT), Nuclear Medicine, Positive Emission Tomography (PET), Mammography Services and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR).

Department Specific Job Scope

The BHN, as a member of the PCS Radiology Nursing Services and Mammography team, which consists of and is not limited to RNs, Mammographers, and Mammography Manager and Supervisor, maintains detailed knowledge and understanding of the Breast Health process.
