Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director, provide in-depth, wide-ranging and complex academic advising and holistic services to undergraduates throughout CA&ES. Serve as an experienced and expert resource for and provide leadership to Undergraduate Academic Programs (UAP) colleagues, departmental academic advisers, and campus partners on a wide variety of policy implementation guidelines. Provide advice and guidance to the Chairs and members of college faculty governance committees in managing undergraduate education in the college and/or develop and direct college-wide or campus-wide programs. Interpret and apply complex Academic Senate, college and campus academic and administrative regulations and policies associated broadly with undergraduate education and advising. Collaborate with the Associate Dean, Director, and Associate Director in office planning and the development of office policies and procedures designed to optimize the delivery of advising and academic support services. Represent the college at public forums and responding on behalf of the college to inquiries from the general public. Make decisions on dismissal, readmission, late course actions and other matters of similar import for individual students. Evaluate and officially certify the completion of degree requirements. Share in supervision and training of student Academic Peer Advisers, Aggie Ambassadors, and student assistants. With a shared leadership approach, collaborate with other UAP staff on projects, programs, and events that serve students from pre-matriculation to post-graduation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in holistic advising and counseling approaches and experience with academic policies, procedures, and requirements in a higher education setting; recommending solutions to progression and requirement issues; ability to make proper referrals to other campus resources.
  • Experience discussing and engaging in practices directly related to equity, inclusion, identity development, diversity, and cultural competency and humility. Experience with developing and assessing approaches and programs related to intercultural community-building, belonging, and identity development.
  • Experience using interpersonal, communication, problem solving and listening skills to identify and document patterns of student academic needs; to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet needs; experience and skills to facilitate workshops and present in public forums; and to interact and provide guidance to emotionally upset students and parents from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to make decisions independently, manage details of complex projects and processes aligned with strategic priorities from start to finish with minimal direction, and to adapt to constantly shifting priorities and outcomes, to contribute and lead in a shared leadership model where collaboration, teamwork, and cooperation are emphasized in order to provide high quality student services, and skills to supervise student staff in a variety of venues and circumstances.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based advising and student development strategies that advance principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including experience discussing and engaging in practices directly related to equity, inclusion, identity development, diversity, and cultural competency and humility.
  • Experience using interpersonal, communication, problem solving and listening skills to identify and document patterns of student academic needs; to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet needs; and to interact and provide guidance to emotionally upset students and parents from all backgrounds, including traditionally underserved and international communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in higher education, student services, counseling, advising or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience creating and implementing academic success, undergraduate research, study abroad, student leadership, professional development programs and/or workshops.
  • Experience using student-facing programs and websites such as, Banner, PeoplesoftASSIST. org, and College Source Online. Knowledge of UC policies regarding privacy of information.
  • Knowledge of College and University regulations, procedures and academic requirements to provide advice to Dean's and Directors on existing policies and/or regulations and to make suggestions for improvements.
  • Knowledge of higher education procedures and academic requirements to provide advice to administrators, faculty, and staff on existing policies and/or regulations and to make suggestions for improvements.
  • Organizational and communication skills to facilitate workshops and present in public forums.
  • Knowledge of policies regarding privacy of student information.

Department Overview

The CA&ES Undergraduate Academic Programs (UAP) unit has overall responsibility for the design, development, and implementation of the administration of the degree-granting programs in the college, as well as outreach, recruitment and student activities. This includes the design and delivery of academic advising and educational enhancement programs for students; serving as a primary information resource for students, faculty, and staff and the general public; interpreting, analyzing and implementing a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements; making decisions on academic disqualification from the University and readmission; analyzing and authorizing baccalaureate degree certification; and consulting for and coordinating the operation of the faculty governance system of the college. UAP monitors the progressand advises CA&ES students from matriculation through graduation. The unit collaborates with partners across campus to create and support programs for diverse student populations. UAP has primary responsibility for managing the implementation of all undergraduate outreach and recruitment activities, including those efforts designed to recruit, admit, retain, and increase persistence and success among under-served, first generation, international, and community college transfer students. UAP has primary responsibility for developing and implementing all student-oriented events, including commencement. The unit's scope of responsibility is college-wide, extending to the department and divisions administered by the college. Work Environment
