Job Description
ECU Department of Collection Services at Laupus Health Sciences Library is seeking a graduate student assistant to assist with the management and maintenance of the library's physical and digital collections.

Major responsibilities for this position include:

  • Assisting in inventory and weeding projects of the library's physical collections
  • Reviewing and processing donated materials
  • Checking holdings of electronic materials, including journals and eBooks
  • Shifting, shelving, and shelf-reading of materials
  • Other maintenance projects to be assigned on an as-needed basis


Specific Duties
Inventory and Weeding
Check for titles in the stacks and review bibliographic data for errors Identify and pull materials for deselection
Remove deselected materials from the catalog
Process and discard deselected print books
Donated Materials
Review donated materials and check against current titles in the catalog
Organize and sort materials for review by the Collection Development Librarian
Prepare rejected materials for discard or transfer
Electronic Holdings
Review current journal subscriptions and electronic books for accuracy and accessibility
Identify errors with electronic materials and report to Collections Technician for further review
Physical Collections
Regularly engage in basic stacks management duties, including shelf-reading, dusting, straightening, etc.
Assist in shifting projects on an as-needed basis
Assist in searching for missing or lost materials on an as-needed basis
Report any damaged items or areas of concern to the Collections Technician for further review
Other Projects
Any other project as assigned that relate to the management and maintenance of the library's physical and electronic holdings

The hourly rate for this position is $14.00 /hour. Hours worked would be on average 10 hours/week with no more than 25 hours/week. Total pay cannot exceed the maximum award offered for the semester, so the maximum hours worked in a week and over the semester will vary based on the award offered.
Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
Good written and oral communications skills required.
Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
Detailed oriented and good organizational skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and willing and able to learn new computer programs.
Prior experience in libraries or data management preferred but not required.
