Job Description
ECU Department of Laupus Library is currently seeking a Federal Work Study Graduate Student Assistant.

The History Collections Graduate Student Assistant will engage in a variety of activities in support of the History Collections at Laupus Health Sciences Library. The Assistant will work most closely with the Archivist but will also interact professionally with employees throughout the library. This employee will work with published materials and with unique manuscript materials. The Archivist will supervise and set priorities for the Assistant.
Specific Duties:
Archives Projects

  • Process and rehouse collections
  • Enter materials into Archives-space
  • Contribute to our Born Digital preservation initiatives
  • Prepare obsolete media types for digital preservation
  • Assist with transcribing oral history interviews and adding metadata to the records.


Assist the Archivist with Exhibitions

  • Assistance with the curation of exhibits
  • Assist in exhibit/display design and label production

Help with needs related to the Medical History Interest Group lecture series and other events

  • Work with pop-up exhibits
  • Room set-up
  • Promotion
  • Manage virtual Q&A during hybrid events

Maintain 4th floor gallery space

  • Assist the Archivist with room set-up for 25Live events
  • Ensure chairs are in order in the gallery space on a daily basis

Collections Projects

  • Perform inventories of the library's rare book collection
  • Carry out Health Science Library's gift processing procedures
  • Collaborate with Archivist and other library employees to describe and process Library materials
  • Assist clients who seek access to the History Collections
  • Represent Health Science Library's History Collections through person-to-person and telephone encounters
  • Assist the Archivist as needed.
  • Other projects as requested.

The hourly rate for this position is $14.00 /hour. Hours worked would be on average 10 hours/week with no more than 25 hours/week. Total pay cannot exceed the maximum award offered for the semester, so the maximum hours worked in a week and over the semester will vary based on the award offered.
Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
Good written and oral communications skills are required.
Detail oriented and good organizational skills.
Prior experience with or study of archives, history, museum studies, library and/or information science preferred.
Experience with inventories, metadata, or digitization desirable.
