Vice President, Ambulatory Nursing

The Vice President, Ambulatory Nursing is responsible and accountable for the overall delivery and management of nursing professional practice, education, administration, and clinical services across the Ambulatory Enterprise including Yale Medicine (YM), Northeast Medical Group (NEMG), and hospital-based practices.
Working closely with clinical and operational stakeholders, the Vice President, Ambulatory Nursing guides the execution of strategy to achieve the highest standards and quality in nursing practice in the ambulatory environment. They will partner with the health system Chief Nursing Executive and other nursing leaders across the Enterprise to ensure alignment and promote a patient-centered clinical practice with unsurpassed quality and safety.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Participate as a member of the senior ambulatory executive team and system nursing council in strategic and tactical planning for the organization.
  • 2. Design an ambulatory nursing infrastructure and clinical practice plan that enhances a team-based care model across the various types of ambulatory sites.
  • 3. Support and lead various efforts to communicate with patient care staff, and effect positive change in values and behaviors to support the strategic direction of the organization.
  • 4. In partnership with other senior leaders, lead a quality improvement program that enhances clinical and nurse-sensitive outcomes, patient satisfaction, safety, and efficient patient flow.
  • 5. Integrate the clinical programs of nursing across all ambulatory sites setting a standard for nursing care delivery.
  • 6. Be accountable for a culture of people excellence in which the leaders and employees are engaged in a way that demonstrates mutual trust, respect, care, and concern.
  • 7. Develop systems that articulate evidence-based standards of patient care and evaluate performance against these standards.
  • 8. Support the efforts and achievements towards magnet designation and develop strategies to take the nursing organization to the next level.
  • 9. In partnership with human resources, develop a workforce recruitment and development plan, that includes diversity, responding to the clinical needs of the organization, providing guidance on matters related to staff competencies, practice, and the working conditions of the clinical staff.
  • 10. Create a continuous learning environment for nursing practice with a focus on inter-professional education, team-based learning, professional growth, and autonomous function.
  • 11. Through an interdisciplinary approach and in partnership with patients and their families, work to identify clinical care best practices and standardize that throughout the organization.
  • 12. Serve as a role model and facilitator of quality and specific performance of nursing services while promoting a culture of care, empathy, respect, and safety.
  • 13. Find meaningful and useful ways to connect with front-line staff by being visible and by demonstrating professional, consensus-building advocacy.
  • 14. Establish effective relationships and open communication between nursing staff, medical staff, ancillary departments, and operations in order to establish partnerships on program development, performance improvement, and operational enhancements.
  • 15. Partner with other senior leaders to plan budgets, monitor financial performance, and ensure a positive operating margin. Evaluate the cost analytics on various approaches to care and then implement those that represent the best and most efficient models of care.
  • 16. Develop collaborative working relationships with labor unions to provide mutually agreed upon programs and services for the staff.
  • 17. Work collaboratively with nursing leadership across the system on initiatives based around system metrics, quality improvement, patient throughput, labor management, nursing impact, and standards of practice.
  • 18. Establishes continuous performance improvement standards and formulates management policies and systems to ensure that excellence and continuous quality improvement form a basis for all patient services activity.
  • 19. Ensures professional compliance with regulatory and legislative mandates for all professions within Patient Care Operations.
  • 20. Evaluates the cost analytics on various approaches to care and then implements those that represent the best and most efficient models of care.
  • 21. Determines a staffing plan that accomplishes all stated objectives and standards of nursing practice and promotes maximum utilization of personnel.
  • 22. Complete other relevant business activities and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's and Master's degrees in nursing or other related fields are required.
*At least one degree must be in nursing.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible nursing leadership experience with strong hands-on, clinical background, and Union experience preferred.

LICENSURE

Current CT state RN licensure required.
Certified in a Nursing or Healthcare related field in Administrative, Clinical, or Executive practice by a professional nursing or healthcare related organization, i.e., American Organization of Nursing Executives, Association of Peri-operative Registered Nurses required.

Strong operational and financial acumen with a track record of leading and partnering around a vision for clinical excellence.
Known to be a highly effective leader - who can both sit at the executive table and relate to and engage with interdisciplinary teams of clinicians.
Approachable and energetic individual who is visible and wants to serve those closest to the patient.
Ability to infuse enthusiasm and encourage nurses to learn and accept accountability for their own professional development.
Strong demonstrated transformational and matrixed leadership skills (inspires, problem solves, communicates across multiple organizations, and executes) to champion the organization's vision. Specialized training in patient safety and quality.
Leader in the field of patient services management who is well-versed in best practices in nursing and patient care, magnet hospital requirements, Institute of Medicine Report, Institute of Health Performance Improvement/Quality Management Protocols, and other best practices in performance improvement and quality management.
Dynamic patient care services management leader with an entrepreneurial and creative mind.
Leader with advanced skills in communication and relationship-building; has a track record of fostering excellent working relationships with clinician and non-clinician colleagues.
Knowledge of labor relations, economics, and nursing-related legislation.
Articulate and adaptable team player.
Reflective, thoughtful leader capable of translating, communicating, and energizing a team to achieve excellence in performance improvement.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

May require travel between YNHHS Ambulatory sites. Prolonged standing, walking, and lifting required.
