Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Physics at North Carolina A&T State University, College of Science and Technology, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position starting in August 2025. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program in one of the three fields: soft matter physics, semiconductor physics, or quantum as applied to optics or computing. The appointment is expected to be at the assistant professor level, but exceptionally qualified applicants might be considered for a higher rank. The successful candidate is expected to involve undergraduate and graduate students in active research and contribute to the growth of the PhD Program in Applied Science and Technology.
The hired faculty is also expected to show commitment to teaching excellence and service. She/he is expected to teach Physics courses both at the graduate and undergraduate level, develop courses and curricula, direct students in research, and provide service to the University and community.
The Physics Department is undergoing a strategic realignment. A candidate whose teaching and research efforts will complement or create synergy with existing faculty members and promote the mission of the Physics Department and the strategic vision of the College of Science and Technology (CoST) as well as the University is highly desired.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor's programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master's degrees in Engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.

Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" status. The College of Science and Technology integrates science, mathematics, and technology to advance knowledge and prepare the next generation of science and technology leaders. The College embraces the mission of the University as a land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM by expanding new frontiers in science, creating novel technologies, developing innovative approaches to STEM teaching and learning, and formulating scientific and technological solutions that lead to transformative social and economic development. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the PhD Program of Applied Science Technology. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.
The Department of Physics has twelve faculty members (https://www.ncat.edu/cost/departments/physics/people/index.php) with active research areas that include experimental nuclear physics, astrophysics, chemical physics, biological and soft matter physics, computational physics, atmospheric sciences, and meteorology. The Department serves both undergraduate and graduate students at the MS and PhD level.
Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. in physics (experimental) or physics-related discipline is required by the start of employment.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Preference will be given to applicants with a successful postdoctoral research experience and a strong research record.
