Position Description
Primary Purpose and Essential Functions |
The Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant or Associate Professor of Choral Conducting. The successful candidate will be an established conductor, choral and vocal pedagogue, and educator rising toward, or of, national stature. The candidate will be willing and able to collaborate with colleagues in an innovative and forward-looking ensemble program. Pacific's ensembles serve students through a pool-based approach to personnel and concerts. The approach prepares students for healthy work at a professional pace and provides significant flexibility for imaginative programming.
Duties include:
- Principal conductor and artistic director Pacific's choral ensembles, presently constituted as the Pacific Singers and the University Chorus.
- Establish and sustain a modern vision for Pacific's choral program, one that values music of the past, present, and future, and is aligned with Pacific and the Conservatory missions and values.
- Establish effective and productive music major recruiting activities in collaboration with music faculty and staff.
- Expand choral ensemble reach within and beyond Pacific's campus.
- Collaborate with faculty and students to develop healthy and innovative choral ensembles of national distinction.
- Teach undergraduate conducting and mentor student conductors in rehearsal and performance settings.
- In collaboration with vocal and ensemble faculty, and supporting staff, guide operations of the choral program.
- As an educator, singer, and collaborator, model best practices pedagogically and professionally.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Master of Music in choral conducting or equivalent professional experience.
- Established career as a conductor in higher education and/or professional settings.

Preferred Qualifications |
DMA in conducting, or the equivalent professional experience.- An unflagging commitment to inclusion in concert programming and pedagogy.
- The ability to prepare undergraduates for careers as singers, choral music educators, and in an array of music careers consonant with the Conservatory's degree offerings.
- Steadfast commitment to healthy vocal technique in rehearsals and performances.
- Ability to collaborate with multiple organizations on campus and in Pacific communities.
- Ability to sustain and amplify the University of the Pacific's record as a center of excellence in singing.
- Willingness and ability to work as part of a team of ensemble leaders who share conducting duties collaboratively within Pacific's ensembles and eschew "turf".
- Presentation of choral ensembles in regionally and/or nationally recognized settings.
- Achievements in conducting singers and instrumentalists in rehearsals and concerts. This may include choral/orchestral, musical theatre, and other collaborative projects.
- Ability to teach in a related area (choral methods and other areas of specialization).
- Demonstrated knowledge of and/or degree in vocal pedagogy.
- Record of achievement as a collaborator with people of diverse backgrounds and in a wide array of cultures.
- Demonstrated success in college level settings.
- Sustained record of performances and/or presentations in regional and national settings.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in one's work.
- Demonstrated success with secondary-level choral ensembles.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.

Physical Requirements |

Occasional walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and use of phone. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard musical environment with the use of computer and phones. Work performed during standard business hours between 8 AM and 5 PM. Occasional overtime is required to meet critical business deadlines. It will require some nights and weekends. |
Hiring Range |
$72,000-$85,000. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
