Job Description

We are currently hiring a Formula Optimization Product Developer in Boston, MA or Breinigsville, PA.

*A Hybrid position at Boston Beer requires that our coworkers reside within commuting distance to be onsite according to their teams' weekly schedule.

The Product Developer, Formula Optimization (FO) is the creative and technical development lead for recipe optimization projects within the Boston Beer portfolio. The Product Developer will specifically be responsible for executing development work and leading support projects for delivering optimized or more efficient recipes to Production while maintaining quality, sensory, safety, and compliance. They will contribute to project strategy development and contribute to/execute team ways of working projects to improve efficiency, consistency, collaboration, and communication to stakeholders. With support from Manager or other Mentors, the PD will coordinate all cross-functional work regarding the recipe optimization including Sensory, Ingredient Strategy, Quality, Legal, Process Optimization, Procurement, Brewing, and others.

Project Strategy



  • The Product Developer should be engaged in and learning about the PD R&D product development and product portfolio strategy as they execute optimization projects, work with key partners and outline clear objectives and criteria for success.
  • As part of the standard FO project execution process, works with cross-functional teams to evaluate technical feasibility and any processing hurdles to consider and evaluate
  • Provides feedback on project direction and resources required for project success


Project Execution



  • Executes benchtop blends to research and qualify optimizations for production
  • Maintains a clean lab space and supports the management of an organized and well-stocked lab
  • Accountable to completing all tasks required get project to the finish line, including beverage development at the benchtop scale
  • Developer should be able to identify project risks as they arise and collaborate with Mentors and Manager to resolve
  • Acts as technical lead for assigned projects in cross-functional update meetings
  • Works with procurement and external partners to source compliant ingredients. Understands cost implications of optimization
  • Ensures product consistency, quality, compliance, and process compatibility across all production types


Product Transition to Production



  • Support Procurement, Engineering, Process Optimization, Operations, Commercialization, QA, and Sensory in transition of optimized recipes, including onsite review of first productions when necessary
  • Ensures compliance with government regulations, certification requirements and TTB and FDA label registration
  • Optimizes products to ensure regulatory compliance across all production processes and materials
  • Supports Operations and Commercialization in transition of optimized recipes to breweries, ensuring highest quality and safety
  • Modifies specifications of optimized recipes


What Ingredients You'll Bring:

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Sciences degree, preferably in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Fermentation Science or other life sciences
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience
  • Proven experience with report writing and good communication skills
  • Must possess the technical skills to work in a lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing scale environments
  • High proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel & PowerPoint)
  • May be required to periodically lift and/or move objects up to 50lbs
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer, tablet, etc. for an extended period of time
  • Bending, twisting and reaching
  • Willingness to wear PPE


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree preferably in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Fermentation Science or other life sciences
  • Prior experience with flavors a plus
  • Experience with project management tracking systems such as Basecamp, Workfront, and/or Microsoft OneNote is preferred


Level: 7

At the Boston Beer Company and in accordance with pay transparency laws, we are open about our salary ranges. For this role, the salary range is between $45,900and $104,000 However, it's important to note that where the person hired starts in this range is dependent on their related experience, skillset and location. Additionally, this position qualifies for an discretionary annual bonus based on company and induvial performance, and certain sales roles might include a car allowance
